Professor Young’s research applies chemical principles to improve understanding of natural and engineered systems and to contribute to solving important environmental problems. His current research focuses on understanding how chemicals in products enter, are transformed by, and impact environmental systems. Much of this work relies on non-target chemical analysis using high resolution mass spectrometry to identify contaminants of concern. Applications include assessing risks of wastewater discharge, biosolid application, pesticide application, indoor chemical use, biomethane combustion, or urban wildfires.
