Research

Dr. Johís current role is to coordinate the NSF GK-12 RESOURCE program. In this program, Ph.D. engineering students develop science curriculum and teach renewable energy lessons to elementary school students. Dr. Joh also develops and instructs laboratory short courses on basic laboratory techniques and plant biotechnology for the NSF CREATE-REU and -IGERT programs, respectively, and maintains a shared lab for biotechnical engineering experiments. His recent research focused on the growth of Acidothermus cellulolyticus, a thermophilic bacterium, in solid-state fermentation on switchgrass substrate. A. cellulolyticus is a candidate microorganism for biological pre-treatment of biomass feedstock for ethanol production. Cellulolytic enzyme production and growth inhibition were examined.
