• Horizontal gene transfer, degradation of PAHs, structure and function of microbial communities, single cell analysis, (all in environmental engineering applications).

Aerobic wastewater treatment

• Use of genetically modified microorganisms (GMO), sequencing batch    reactors (SBR), use of fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) to    monitor reactors, membrane bioreactors, nitrification and    denitrification, biological phosphorus removal, bioaugmentation.

Bacterial and viral pathogens

• Environmental detection by PCR, real time PCR.

Microbial Source Tracking

• Highway facilities, TMDLs

Drinking water

• Role of biofilms in public health.
